SSAT scores: scaled scores, percentiles and what schools do with them
The SSAT has no passing score and no cutoff. On the Upper Level, the total score falls between 1500 and 2400, and the report adds a percentile from 1 to 99. E3n, which provides the test, says every school differs in how it weighs scores and that most look at the whole applicant. It tells worried families to speak with the schools.

What scores does the SSAT report?
The Upper Level report gives a total and three section results: verbal, quantitative and reading. Each comes with a scaled score, a percentile and the average score for context.
| Total scaled score | 1500 to 2400 on the Upper Level |
|---|---|
| Section results | A scaled score and a percentile for verbal, quantitative and reading |
| Percentile | 1 to 99. A 67th percentile means scoring equal to or above 67 percent of first-time test takers in the same grade over the last three years, in the US and Canada |
| Score range | Shown for each section. A student who retests soon will likely land inside it |
| Right answer | One point |
| Wrong answer | A quarter of a point is taken off |
| Skipped question | No points added or taken off |
| Writing sample | Not scored. It goes to every school that receives the scores |
Is there an SSAT cutoff or a score that is good enough?
- E3n names no number. It says every school differs in how it factors scores into an application, and that most will say they view students as a whole.
- It asks families and admission officers to look first at the scaled score. It says a scaled score means the same today as it did 15 years ago.
- Schools also use the scores after admission. E3n says many use them to place students in courses and to spot who could use extra academic support.
- Scores are one input. E3n lists interviews, student essays, teacher recommendations, activities and its Character Skills Snapshot as other ways schools get to know a student.
How should a family read the report?
- The report shows how many questions of each main type were answered correctly, incorrectly or left blank.
- Different versions of the test are given each year. A statistical step called equating adjusts scores so they can be compared across versions.
- E3n does not combine the best sections from different test days. Each sitting is reported whole.

SSAT score questions parents ask
What is a good SSAT score?
E3n does not name one. It says every school differs in how it weighs scores, that most view applicants as a whole, and that families with concerns should speak with the schools.
What is the highest SSAT score?
On the Upper Level the total score falls between 1500 and 2400, so 2400 is the maximum. Percentiles run from 1 to 99.
Is there a penalty for guessing on the SSAT?
On the Middle and Upper Levels, yes. A right answer earns one point, a wrong answer loses a quarter of a point and a skipped question changes nothing.
What does an SSAT percentile mean?
It compares a student with first-time test takers in the same grade over the last three years, in the US and Canada. A 67th percentile means the student scored equal to or above 67 percent of them.
Can I see SSAT scores before sending them to schools?
Yes. A family can wait to add schools until it has seen the scores. Schools added after the release get the scores at once.
Does the SSAT superscore?
No. E3n does not combine the best section scores from different test days.
When do SSAT scores come out?
Paper test scores typically come within two weeks. SSAT at Home scores typically come the Wednesday after the test. A parent must complete the Testing Experience Statement before any scores are released.
